A taste of home
The culinary tastes of a Black Country town are going on tour as a new exhibition by photographer Liz Hingley goes on display at six local libraries.
The town of Smethwick is one of the most culturally diverse places in the UK. It has been long been home to Afro-Caribbean, Irish, Muslim, Sikh and White British communities and continues to welcome new arrivals.
The smells of cooking from all around the world permeate the terraced streets of Smethwick.
In her new exhibition, Home Made in Smethwick, photographer Liz Hingley has captured the day to day lives of the people who call this Black Country town home through the culinary dishes they cook and share.
The photographic portraits and collection of handwritten recipes show how food can so often be a bridge from one generation to the next, from one house to its neighbour.
All those I met contributed to this celebration of the social heritage and culinary richness of Smethwick today.
Talking about the creating the exhibition, Liz Hingley said: “I was generously welcomed into homes and given the unique opportunity to taste personal dishes embedded with meanings and associations."
"With the aim of capturing the essence of a community, I have been the lucky guest at their table and passenger on their journey.”
