Enabling Benefits of the IoT through new Industry Trust Principle
Industry’s first framework for the IoT launched by techUK to create a simplified framework in the digital revolution
techUK has launched its Trust Principles in an Internet of Things (IoT) World, a set of high level principles to build trust in IoT innovations (linked at the bottom of this Insight). Designed to serve as a simple framework for companies, the Principles cover key elements that are needed to help the IoT market to grow by creating greater consumer confidence through:
- Data transparency and customer empowerment ensuring all citizens have control over their own data
- Interoperability so that a user is able to switch between devices, providers and services according to changing preferences
- Security by design in order to help protect from cyber attack
As the Blackett Review from the Government stated, public acceptability and trust are essential to the implementation of the IoT. Those developing in the IoT space need to earn users’ trust in order for the full potential of the technology to be fulfilled. This the intention of techUK’s Trust Principles.
The Internet of Things is a transformative development that can have a greater impact on our economy and society than the first digital revolution. Done right, it can help enable better health services, cleaner and safer public spaces, more efficient industries and generate more innovative businesses and business models. It will also create unprecedented amounts of detailed data, often in real-time, that can then inform and improve the service or product. However, to make it a success, we need to ensure consumers are comfortable with the technology.
Matt Hancock, Minister of State for Digital and Culture, yesterday said:
“The Internet of Things is transforming our lives through innovative products and services with the potential to deliver major benefits for citizens. Successful technology depends on secure technology. We are determined to make sure the UK is an international leader in this technology and that means ensuring the internet of things is cyber secure.
"The principles published today will help provide greater security so that consumers and businesses can benefit from the opportunities the IoT has to offer.”
Stephen Pattison, VP Public Affairs, ARM and techUK IoT Council Chair, yesterday said:
“Trust is the oxygen which will breathe life into the internet of things. Industry needs to show data is safe and that it is properly treated. Otherwise we endanger the potential of the IoT. techUK is right to focus on this.”
Julian David, techUK’s CEO, yesterday explained:
“These principles demonstrate that our industry takes concerns about data, consent and transparency seriously. They are the start of the conversation rather than the end and they offer a solid framework for future discussion. I believe that these Principles will help ensure that the Internet of Things has a smooth transition from theory to reality.”
Jeremy Silver, CEO of the Digital Catapult, yesterday said:
“Digital Catapult is delighted to see companies collaborating on a set of principles for how to do business on the Internet of Things. To create and maintain trust is a challenge and an opportunity for companies creating connected products that ubiquitously collect and use personal data. The IOT Trust principles provide a framework for more focused conversations on issues such as ensuring security in the IoT. We look forward to fostering discussions like this and helping to create innovative solutions in order to enable digital companies in the UK grow more rapidly and become more globally competitive.”
