Scotland welcomes rise in applications for junior doctor posts.

Figures demonstrating junior doctors are finding Scotland an attractive place to live and work are being welcomed by the Scottish Government.

A report from the UK Foundation Programme Office indicated that over the last year the number of applications to junior posts has increased by 27%. In 2015 there were 696 applications and in 2016 this rose to 884.

Commenting on the figures Health Secretary Shona Robison said:

“We welcome the increase in these figures which shows the number of junior doctors who see Scotland as a positive destination is on the rise.

“Junior doctors are valued members of our healthcare team here in Scotland and are integral to our continuing drive to improve care to the people of Scotland.

“Earlier this year a recruitment drive to attract more junior doctors to live and work in Scotland was launched by the Scottish Government. A series of videos, featuring interviews with the Chief Medical Officer and trainee doctors working in NHS Scotland, was produced to highlight the many positive aspects of training, working and living in Scotland.

“Scotland has a strong record of high quality medical training and our Deanery regions are consistently rated amongst the UK’s top medical training centres for trainee’s overall satisfaction. And as a Government we continue to maintain strong, positive relationships with the profession and enjoy a collaborative working relationship.

“I would encourage junior doctors across the UK and beyond to consider the exciting opportunities that the NHS in Scotland provides.”
