Learning to improve

FM announces additional money for Scottish Union Learning Fund.

An extra £840,000 of funding will be made available to trade union members in Scotland to access training and enhance their skills, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

The money will go towards the Scottish Union Learning Fund, which is managed by the Scottish Trades Union Congress, and is on top of the £1.4 million already allocated to the fund in 2015/16.

The fund supports around 10,000 learners every year in courses from digital skills, literacy and numeracy, to specific on the job qualifications.

Making the announcement at the STUC Congress at Ayr Racecourse, the First Minister said:

“I want to see every person in Scotland given the opportunity to get on in life and improve on the skills they already possess, and investing in our workforce is an important part of this.

“A highly-skilled workforce is something which will drive growth in the Scottish economy and I’m committed to making workplace training and development open to all.

“The Scottish Union Learning, supported with Scottish Government funding, allows employers, workers, unions and communities to come together and work in partnership to make this possible, and I’m happy to announce funds to continue this good work.

“I hope those who want to develop their own potential will access this fund and strive to be the best they can be.”
