Minister congratulates outstanding Welsh teaching talent

Education Minister Huw Lewis today offered his congratulations to five Welsh winners of the Silver Pearson Teaching Award.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching in schools and colleges in England, Wales and Ireland. Founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam; they recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach.

The awards are presented on Thank a Teacher Day - 16 May 2014. The Welsh winners will now compete at the UK final of the Teaching Awards at London’s Guildhall on 26 October, where 10 Silver Award winners will receive a Gold Award. The ceremony will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC.

The Welsh winners are:

  • Danny Johnson - Millbrook Primary School, Newport - Teaching Assistant of the Year
  • The Engineering Team – Coleg Y Cymoedd, Cardiff – FE Team of the Year
  • Allen Heard – Ysgol Bryn Elian, Colwyn Bay - Outstanding use of Technology in Education
  • Paul Miles - Coleg Cambria, Wrexham - Outstanding use of Technology in Education
  • Claire Warlow - Tre Uchaf Primary School, Swansea - Teacher of the Year in a Primary School

Huw Lewis, offering his congratulations to the Welsh winners, said:

“I am delighted that top Welsh teaching talent is being recognised with such a prestigious award. I see and hear of great examples of outstanding teaching all of the time in schools and colleges across Wales.  Our Silver Pearson Award winners are great ambassadors for their profession and for Wales and I wish them the very best of luck in the UK final.”
