New Government target for SME spend announced

techUK's Naureen Khan, Associate Director - Central Government, comments on the new target to get more small businesses working on Government contracts.

Yesterday the Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, announced a new target that £1 in every £3 government spends will be with small businesses by 2020.

Responding to the announcement, Naureen Khan, Associate Director - Central Government at techUK, said:

"We welcome the ambitious new target which is a clear signal of the Government's commitment to opening up the public sector tech market. To achieve this target Government must continue to simplify procurement in order to reduce red tape and clarify the currently muddled procurement routes for selling to Government.

Meaningful early market engagement is also critical as it gives visibility of new opportunities and provides civil servants with valuable insights into the skills and capabilities across the market.

We look forward to working with Government to help them meet their target and build a strong ecosystem of technology excellence in the UK."
