Revamped guidance on physical activity launched
Chief Medical Officer for Wales Dr Ruth Hussey has launched a new infographic for healthcare professionals to encourage people to become more physically active.
It summarises existing guidelines from the four UK chief medical officers in one page to help healthcare professionals explain what people can do to improve their health.
Dr Hussey said:
“The guidance from the UK chief medical officers is that adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity every week.
“This infographic highlights some of the benefits of physical activity, which can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 40%, cardiovascular disease by 35%, and breast and colon cancers by 20%.
“We know that one in four people say they would be more active if advised by a health professional and this sets out the advice to follow clearly and simply.
“The infographic gives some examples of ways to get more active. Remember, it is never too late to start – just 10 minutes at a time provides benefit.
“You don’t have to take up a sport – climbing the stairs, gardening and carrying the shopping all count. If you are just starting to exercise, you can start small and build up your activity gradually.”
Health and Social Services Minister Mark Drakeford said:
“I welcome this clear advice. We must all play our part in reducing avoidable chronic diseases. Every day, healthcare professionals can use their time with patients to help them to become more physically active. This simple infographic will ensure they have the information they need when they are talking to people.”
Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport Ken Skates said:
“Our ambition is to make Wales the most active and healthy nation in the UK. Taking part in sport certainly plays a vital role in improving health and fitness but it is also a personal thing. This infographic is helpful because as well as encouraging people to think about their current levels of activeness, it also highlights what you need to do and for how long to make a positive difference.”
The infographic will be shared with doctors, nurses, GP surgeries, allied healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, and with charities.
