Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford has welcomed official UK Government figures which show Wales continues to invest more in key public services.

The Country and Regional Analysis for 2015-16, released by HM Treasury, this morning, shows expenditure on public services in Wales was £9,996 per person – 10% higher than the UK average.

The amount spent per person on health and social services in Wales was £2,696 – 6% higher than in England.

Health and social services spending per person in Wales has increased in real terms in each of the last three years (2013-14; 2014-15 and 2015-16). 

Spending on education per person in Wales in 2015-16 was equivalent to £1,320 –  4% higher than in England.

Professor Drakeford said yesterday:  

“Despite real-terms cuts to our overall budget by the UK Government, these figures confirm that the Welsh Government is continuing to invest more in the key public services in Wales which matter most to people. 

“Investing in our NHS and social services is at the heart of our spending plans for 2017-18. These figures are yet another demonstration of our commitment to provide the best care for people across Wales.

“We spend more per person on education than in England – a sign of our determination to provide the best education system in Wales to give children the best start in life.

“Today’s figures are testament to how much we value our public services and how we have done all we can to protect them from the worst effects of ongoing austerity.”
