Guides advise private, public and third sector on taking climate change action

The Welsh Government has published templates to help organisations in the private, public and third sectors act on climate change.

The three documents highlight what organisations can gain from addressing the challenges of climate change. Each provides advice on producing business cases and includes case studies of organisations that are already seeing the long-term financial and environmental benefits of taking action.

Each template provides its sector with help to address the following issues:

  • Strategic questions to demonstrate synergy with strategy.
  • Economic questions to prove value for money.
  • Commercial questions to prove a project is commercially viable.
  • Financial questions to prove a project is affordable within its timeframe.
  • Management questions to prove an organisation has the resources to achieve a project within its timeframe.

Welcoming publication of the templates, the Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, John Griffiths, said:

“The challenge of climate change demands the drive, determination and adaptability of every business and organisation in Wales. Cutting costs, managing margins, attracting the best talent and pioneering new and products and services are essential. These all have the potential to build a resilient and sustainable economy that lasts beyond our generation.

“There are many people within businesses and organisations looking to reduce their organisation’s emissions and prepare them for the unavoidable impacts of climate change. The business case templates published today will save such businesses time and effort by providing expert guidance tailored to each sector’s requirements. The aim is for an increase in the number of projects being given the go ahead across Wales, which will benefit us all.”

The guides complement a DVD produced by the Welsh Government, in conjunction with the Carbon Trust, which encourages carbon reduction and building resilience to the consequences of climate change.

Welsh Government officials will promote the templates and DVD as part of their ongoing work amongst sector networks. This includes attendance at local service board meetings and working with industry groups.
