Welsh Government agrees contract with GPs in Wales

Health Minister Lesley Griffiths has announced that the Welsh Government has reached an agreement with the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) Wales on changes to the GP contract for 2013/14.

The changes to the contract, which includes an increase of 1.5% in the current level of investment, will ensure high quality care can continue to be provided to patients as well as addressing some of the concerns raised by GPs in Wales about workload implications.

The Minister thanked GPs for their hard work and commitment to the NHS and to patients, and said she wanted to make sure services continually develop to drive forward the Welsh Government’s vision set out in Together for Health.

Lesley Griffiths said:

“This agreement with GPC Wales will enhance our position for further joint working and collaboration in the coming years to continue to develop and improve services for patients across Wales.

“The Welsh Government has listened carefully to the concerns expressed by GPs about workload implications whilst emphasising the need to accelerate the pace of change within primary care.

“Our five year plan for the NHS, Together for Health, is based around community services with patients at the centre, and places prevention, quality and transparency at the heart of healthcare.

“Providing more care and support within the primary care setting is key to this.”
