221 former Remploy workers find new jobs with Welsh Government support
The nine Remploy sites in Wales used to employ an estimated 400 people before the UK Government began moves to close the factories in early 2012.
In response the Welsh Government took action and established the Employer Support Grant (ESG) scheme to offer financial support for employers looking to provide work to eligible disabled Remploy workers. The policy is supported with more than £2 million of funding.
The latest figures show that 221 former Remploy workers have now found new jobs with support from the grant. The panel that decides who receives the support has also approved 173 more posts, giving hope to those still searching for work.
Many new jobs were created in Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Swansea, and Porth. A number of new enterprises, founded by disabled former Remploy staff, were also supported by the Welsh Government. These include Accommodation Furniture Solutions Limited in Swansea and E-Cycle Limited in Porth and a number of small and micro enterprises.
Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister Jeff Cuthbert said:
"The UK Government's decision to close all the Remploy factories was the wrong decision at the wrong time for staff in Wales. That is why we took action to step in and help those who suddenly found themselves facing an uncertain future.
"It is great to see that with our support 221 former Remploy workers now find themselves with new jobs in a range of businesses, from new start-up firms to small enterprises, demonstrating the spirit of Remploy staff and the commitment of the Welsh Government.
"Employers have praised our employer support grant for its accessibility and swift, transparent process. We will continue to work tirelessly to help all those affected by the closure of Remploy to find fulfilling and accessible employment."
