Dismissal of former MPS commander Ali Dizaei and publication of IPCC report

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was advised yesterday that former Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) commander Ali Dizaei has been dismissed without notice.

The IPCC provided the MPS with its report into Ali Dizaei’s involvement in the arrest and detention of Waad Al-Baghdadi in July 2008 following Mr Dizaei’s conviction for perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office in February 2012.

As a result, the MPS convened a hearing on 3 May where Mr Dizaei faced a misconduct charge in relation to his convictions.

The tribunal found that charge proven and also that the nature of his convictions involved proof of his dishonest conduct, a lack of integrity and discreditable conduct.

Deborah Glass, IPCC Deputy Chair said today:

“Ali Dizaei’s dismissal from the Metropolitan Police Service was the right and inevitable outcome following his conviction, a second time, for serious criminal offences. There is no place in the police for corrupt officers and they have no business wielding the powers of a police officer in our communities.

“Many will wonder how Mr Dizaei was able to rise to the very senior rank of commander. The Metropolitan Police Service needs to ensure that never again is its reputation so badly damaged by the acts of one of its most senior officers.”
