The CBI yesterday responded to the publication of a new HS2 business case report by the Government.

Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director, said:

"This new business case goes some way towards helping people understand the need for the HS2 and will also reverse some of the damage done by ministers' previous obsession with journey times.

“We need a modern railway line to tackle the looming capacity crunch on the West Coast mainline and the alternatives don’t stack up.

"HS2 will better connect eight of our ten biggest cities and boost regeneration along and beyond the route, but we also need complementary road and rail investment to improve local networks.

“We would urge politicians on both sides of the House to back this important project."
