Credit crunch, avoidable contact, re-use of public information and digital inclusion feature in packed agenda for Socitm National Conference 23 April

With the credit crunch and its consequences still dominating the news, leading commentator and LSE professor Tony Travers will open the Socitm National Conference on 23 April with an assessment of how the crisis is going to affect local government in general, and the deployment of ICT in particular.  He kicks off a packed programme that will stimulate thinking around new models for public, private and social enterprise likely to emerge from the recession.

Richard Allan, Cisco’s Director of Government Affairs, and chair of the Cabinet Office’s Power of Information Task Force will provide a guide to the re-use of public information and other possibilities around web 2.0 being heralded as an important part of the new, digital, Britain.

A presentation from the London Borough of Hillingdon will demonstrate the possibilities of harnessing corporate and service transformation around the idea of ‘avoidable contact’.
Derided by some as another pointless data collection exercise imposed by central government, NI 14, the ‘avoidable contact indicator’ has been a major driver in re-invigorating Hillingdon’s corporate transformation programme, prompting it to get a real handle on the volume and value of its customer contacts. The session will be introduced with a presentation of early findings from Socitm’s own Customer Access Improvement Service, which demonstrate the potential of channel management as a means to generate significant efficiency gains.

A session on digital inclusion will feature a case study from Solihull Community Housing about working in partnership with the third sector to deliver broadband access to vulnerable groups in social housing, as well as to local businesses, as part of a regeneration programme.

The Socitm AGM will be held during the lunch break and will include elections for the new
Socitm President. The event will be supported by an exhibition of relevant products and services, and the programme will include a series of supplier demonstrations in the exhibition area throughout the day.
