Minister Praises YMCA’s Work with Offenders

Housing Minister, Carl Sargeant visited Roath to see the good work Cardiff YMCA Housing Association is carrying out with offenders.

Cardiff YMCA Housing Association is a Registered Social Landlord providing temporary accommodation for homeless people of all ages and various backgrounds.

The YMCA supports residents in their search for permanent accommodation and also visits several prisons to assess the accommodation needs of prisoners on their release.

The Minister said,

”The Welsh Government is committed to doing much more to prevent homelessness by working with those at risk earlier and more effectively.

“The Housing Bill, currently making its way through the National Assembly, places a much stronger duty on local authorities to prevent homelessness.

“It will bring greater fairness through help for everyone at risk of homelessness, and includes a new prevention duty that will help to ensure that the housing needs of offenders are assessed and addressed before release.

“The approach taken by Cardiff YMCA is an excellent example of the type of work  being done to support former prisoners across Wales.

“The Bill will further underpin this work and ensure that all prisoners have access to enhanced preventative services prior to release.”
