“Turnaround” shows how it turns around young people’s lives
On a visit to the include “Turnaround” project in Pontypridd the Minister met with staff at the centre and some of the young people involved in the programme.
Dr Gibbons said the project was an example of the type of support service for substance misusers that the Assembly Government was hoping to build upon following the launch of its 10-year plan to reduce the harm caused by drugs and alcohol.
Dr Gibbons said:
The misuse of drugs, alcohol or other substances is still one of the most devastating ways in which individuals can harm themselves, their families and the communities they live in.
The staff and young people I have spoken to today have explained how young people’s substance misuse has prevented them from getting involved in any, education, training or employment activities. Through include’s “Turnaround” project these young people are getting access to a specific programme designed to help them change, while improving their basic, social and life skills.
As a government we are working hard with partner organisations to reduce the damage caused to individuals, their families and society from substance misuse. Many of the young people and their families caught up in these problems desperately want to change. ‘Turnaround’ can make that difference. I wish the project continued success in the work they are doing to help these vulnerable young people get back involved in their communities.
Paul Keenleyside, Assistant Director Connexions and include for CfBT Education Trust, added:
Our Turnaround projects in South Wales are uniquely effective in helping young people who are substance misusers achieve change. Last year 79% of Turnaround attendees left the programme and entered employment, education or training. The very positive comments from the Minister are an endorsement of the hard work and commitment of the staff involved in delivery of the include Turnaround projects.
