Welsh Government seeking market feedback on next generation broadband intervention area
It follows a review undertaken last year to take stock of what the private sector is doing to invest in next generation broadband.
The Welsh Government is seeking to ensure that all residential premises and businesses in Wales have access to Next Generation Broadband by 2015 and will intervene in areas where the private sector is not investing.
The Welsh Government’s proposed intervention areas for next generation broadband can be accessed on Open Market Review – Phase 2.
The market now has an opportunity to put forward any further proposals or comments to help the Welsh Government refine its understanding of where private sector investment in next generation networks has already happened or is planned over the next three years.
Interested parties are being encouraged to contribute to the second phase of the open market review process and people wishing to participate can get details at Open Market Review – Phase 2.
The information will help Welsh Ministers determine where the deployment of the next generation broadband network should be focussed and the deadline for comments is 23rd February 2012.
Business Minister Edwina Hart said,
“This review has a clear aim – to make sure our intervention area fully takes into account what the private sector is planning when it comes to next generation broadband.
“We want to make sure that the Welsh Government intervenes in a way that best maximises our investment. We have made a firm commitment in our Programme for Government to provide access to next-generation broadband by 2015, and this investment in a first class, globally competitive digital infrastructure will ensure that Wales is at the forefront of the digital economy.
“The availability of robust high-speed broadband in the 21st century is essential for our businesses and residential properties in order for them to access services and the opportunities provided by digital technologies.”
