Tackling climate change
The next 12 months will be critical in defining Scotland's approach to tackling climate change, John Swinney told Parliament yesterday.
Mr Swinney was publishing the Government's second annual report on Scotland's Climate Change Programme.
Mr Swinney said:
"The year ahead is a critical one for addressing climate change and Scotland can, and must, play its part in seizing opportunities to reduce emissions. Later this year we will frame in law our commitment to reduce Scottish emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, the most ambitious statutory target anywhere in the world.
"Setting targets is not an end in itself, it's delivery that matters. This report details the work already underway and we will shortly be publishing an initial assessment of further options to reduce emissions. This is the first step in a wider programme of work to develop an overview of how Scotland might deliver an 80 per cent reduction by 2050.
"We are committed to introducing a new system of carbon accounting across the whole of the Scottish Government. We will later this year bring together international expertise to put Scotland at the forefront of such developments and ensure that all decisions taken across Government give full and proper consideration to the implications for climate change.
"Much has been achieved over the past year but it is clear that more needs to be done.
"I'm confident that Government, business and the people of Scotland are able to rise to the challenge of climate change and that together we can build the right world for future generations."
