APPOINTMENT OF CHILD SUPPORT AGENCY CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Today the Department for Work and Pensions announces the appointment of Stephen Geraghty as Chief Executive of the Child Support Agency. He was formerly Managing Director of Direct Line Group and will take up his post on 4 April 2005. He succeeds Doug Smith, the current Chief Executive of the Child Support Agency, who is retiring from the Civil Service.

Stephen Geraghty will report directly to Richard Mottram, Permanent Secretary who commented:

"I am very pleased that Stephen is joining us. His track record in delivering high-quality customer services means that he is very well suited to take on one of the most demanding leadership and management challenges in Government."

Secretary of State, Alan Johnson, said

"I welcome this appointment and I look to Stephen to improve the performance of the Child Support Agency which has experienced significant problems with its computer system. It is vital that parents take financial responsibility for their children whether they live with them or not, and it is equally important that the CSA delivers a good level of customer service to help parents meet those responsibilities."

Stephen Geraghty said:

"I am very excited to be joining the Department. I recognise that the Agency faces significant challenges and very much relish the chance to work with the staff to meet those challenges and improve the service provided to the Agency's clients."
