We must ensure UK remains regenerative medicine leader
The Government has published a new report that outlines how the UK can maintain its position as a leader in the field of regenerative medicine.
The report from the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills identifies that the UK’s academic institutions and capacity for research gives us a competitive advantage in regenerative science, while highlighting that medical research charities, like the British Heart Foundation, play a crucial role.
The Government outlines ten actions it will take to support the research sector, including providing more help to get innovative regenerative medicines to patients and developing a national strategy to support the sector in the long-term.
Establishing the Government’s new single research regulatory body is now a priority

“It’s an exciting time for regenerative medicine in the UK and there are significant opportunities in the field of cardiovascular research. In fact, the report specifically recognises the BHF’s planned £50million investment in regenerative medicine as part of our Mending Broken Hearts campaign.
“The authors are right to highlight the potential of the NHS to drive forward regenerative science. Improving the culture of research in our health service is vital if we’re to turn medical breakthroughs into treatments for patients.
“Establishing the Government’s new single research regulatory body is now a priority to make sure we streamline regulation to ensure that as cardiovascular regenerative medicine develops, treatments can be effectively adopted within the NHS.”
The report was the result of a consultation led by the Office for Life Sciences.
