Criminal Procedure Rules changes come into effect

Changes to the Criminal Procedure Rules, affecting procedures used in magistrates' courts, the Crown Court and the Criminal Division of the Court of Appeal, came into effect yesterday.

This is the eighth amendment of the rules. There are new rules about:

  • investigation orders
  • disclosure
  • witness statements
  • contempt of court
  • costs orders.

Some existing rules have been amended.


The Statutory Instrument, The Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Rules 2009 was laid in Parliament on 29 July 2009 and the reference number is 2009 No. 2087 (L. 23).
