New publication by University of East Anglia, with Institute for Government

The Coalition: Voters, Parties and Institutions brings together leading commentators, academics and political figures to examine how the coalition government came about, describe how it works, and look at the views of voters, backbenchers and the media.

The publication, based on a conference at the Institute for Government last year, describes how ready the parties and the media were for the prospect of a hung parliament and how they reacted when it occurred. It reflects on what lessons can be drawn from academic research into past coalitions in the UK and from comparative analysis with local government and abroad. It analyses polling in the run up to the election, and considers the prospects for the parties for the future. Containing a broad range of perspectives and some of the most recent academic work and foremost commentators on the coalition, The Coalition: Voters, Parties and Institutions is an important contribution to our growing understanding of the 2010 election’s impact.
