Youth Workers celebrated at awards ceremony

Youth workers from across Wales have been recognised for their hard work and dedication at this year’s Youth Work Wales Excellence Awards.

The awards, organised by the Welsh Government, are a chance for youth workers, youth projects and young people involved in youth work to be recognised by the communities they serve.

Individuals and projects were awarded for their outstanding contributions to youth work, including specialist projects to promote and support culture and support for the health and wellbeing of young people.

Kimberley McCarthy, from Cwmbran, won the award for Outstanding Full-Time Youth Worker. She was nominated by her work manager who felt she deserved recognition for her tireless work with the Cwmbran Youth Centre supporting people from all backgrounds to gain confidence and make a positive change to their lives.

Kimberley has used her experiences in turning her life around following an abusive childhood to help others. She specialises in helping those in debt, with drug and alcohol issues and supporting young parents with custodial issues. Her mentoring has helped young people to access training, find jobs and live much healthier and happier lives.

The Deputy Minister for Skills, Jeff Cuthbert said:

“Every year I continue to be overwhelmed by the selfless dedication given by people to youth work in their communities. These awards are our chance to give something back and say thank you.

“I hope that the stories behind the people and schemes involved in these awards inspire others to take up youth work. Not only does this work change the lives of others but it is an opportunity to try something new and develop skills that will be beneficial in gaining future employment.”

This year’s awards were presented by Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who dedicated his time to the cause for the second year running.

Huw Stephens said:

“I’m really pleased to be involved with the Youth Work Wales Excellence Awards again this year.

“It’s fantastic to see so many young people getting involved in various projects, working alongside dedicated youth workers.”
