The Prime Minister welcomed the Taoiseach at Downing Street today for the third Anglo-Irish Summit, where both leaders agreed that bilateral relations between the UK and Ireland were at an all time high.

They welcomed ongoing collaboration on visas to help strengthen the Common Travel Area and border security, and they committed to maintaining the joint trade programme to further develop cooperation in support of UK and Irish businesses.

On Northern Ireland both leaders pledged to remain in close contact with the parties to facilitate further political progress, including bringing about economic renewal in Northern Ireland.

They discussed cooperation on energy, in particular the potential for exporting renewable electricity from Ireland to the UK. The Prime Minister and Taoiseach agreed it was very important to continue to work closely together on this key issue.

The two leaders also discussed current issues within the European Union, including the Prime Minster’s reform agenda, and priorities for the new commission. They agreed on the need to maintain momentum on the single market, competitiveness and creating jobs and growth that would benefit the UK, Ireland and Europe.
