Scottish man arrested after being deported from Thailand

A 52-year-old man arrested by National Crime Agency officers after being deported from Thailand has been charged with obtaining property by deception.

Walter Douglas, who is originally from Scotland but had been living on the island of Koh Samui, had his visa revoked as part of an investigation by the Thai authorities and was put on a flight to the United Kingdom.

Douglas was greeted by NCA officers when he arrived at Heathrow Airport on Thursday morning.

The charge relates to a fraudulently obtained genuine passport that was recovered by the Spanish National Police during raids in Ibiza in 2006.

Douglas was remanded in custody following a hearing at Birmingham Magistrates Court today. He will next appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 21 February.
