£13.3 million for new flood defence measures announced
Flood and coastal risk schemes in Flintshire, Wrexham, Powys, Monmouthshire, Newport, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan will be able to apply for the financial support.
The five year programme will help protect 700 homes and businesses and will include the construction of flood defences and raising awareness of the threat of flooding among vulnerable communities.
The programme has been made possible with £6 million from the European Regional Development Fund, with the remaining funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and others.
Making the announcement, Environment, Sustainability & Housing Minister Jane Davidson said:
“We have to do all we can to protect and prepare people for the realities of flooding. Climate change means the risk of flooding across Wales is likely to grow and the challenge of dealing with it isn’t simply going to go away. In June we saw all too clearly the impact flooding can have on the lives of families. It is our job to prepare communities the best we can, whether it is by building new flood defences or enabling communities to recover quickly should flooding occur.”
In total, Ministers have been successful in gaining £36 million in European funding to support flood and coastal risk management projects in Wales.
