Anti-Slavery day - more victims being rescued and supported
On Anti-Slavery day the UK Human Trafficking Centre (UKHTC) has this year passed the number of potential victims rescued and referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) compared to the whole of 2011. Last year 946 potential victims were referred; in 2012 this figure has already been reached.
Liam Vernon from SOCA, Deputy Head of the UKHTC said: "Modern day slavery is a significant issue and every day in the UK there are adults and children of both sexes being brutally controlled and exploited for sex, for their labour and forced to commit crime.
"Working in partnership within law enforcement, Government and civil society, both in the UK and abroad, is the only way to protect the vulnerable, prevent abuse and prosecute the traffickers.
"I am delighted that the work of SOCA and our partners has contributed to a significant rise in the number of victims being rescued and supported. It is testament to our combined determination to stamp out this heinous crime, to the growing awareness across society of the nature and scale of trafficking in the UK, and to the confidence that victims have in the UK response and our ability to protect them".
