Will you find your sandwich fulfilling?

Exciting university sandwich placements available at STFC

It’s bad enough when you finish your sandwich at lunch time, and still feel hungry - imagine if you left your student sandwich placement feeling the same way. Sign up for something you can really get your teeth into, by applying for a placement with STFC.

If you’re on a degree course with a recognised sandwich year, you could join us for twelve months and be part of world-leading projects, with access to specific on-the-job training. Take the skills you’ve learned at university to the next level, and make sure you graduate with the work experience you’ll need to get your feet onto the career ladder.

With a competitive salary and benefits package, you can choose from placements at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire, or our HQ at Polaris House in Swindon.

We think science is awesome, and that you’ll love working with us, but you don’t have to take our word for it, as our students can speak for themselves! They wrote issue 12.5 of our science and technology magazine Fascination especially for people like you. You can download a PDF version or read online with Flipbook.

Natercia Rodrigues is just coming to the end of her placement at the Central Laser Facility (CLF) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), where she has been working with the Artemis team. Curiosity about how things work and how discoveries are made motivated Natercia to study Chemistry at the University of Leicester.

For Natercia, an important part of her experience with us has been the huge variety of science undertaken at RAL, offering the opportunity to meet scientists from different disciplines, and to work with people from many different countries. Natercia is going back to Leicester with an understanding of science publishing – an important skill for a career scientist to learn. She also feels like a member of the science community, rather than ‘just a student’, and she’s now sure she wants to continue on to do a PhD when she graduates.

Charlotte Houghton made a real contribution during her sandwich student placement at Daresbury in 2011/12. Charlotte was able to produce an entire edition of Fascination, and enjoyed the experience of working with scientists. Charlotte feels that her time at STFC gave her useful skills that she was able to take back to university. After successfully graduating in Business at Manchester Metropolitan University, Charlotte came back to work at STFC full time, as an External Communications Officer.

Charlotte’s advice to you is that there is no limit to knowledge, and that to be successful you must allow yourself to continually learn. So to find out more about the placements that are available, and to apply, visit the UK Shared Business Services recruitment portal. The closing date for applications is 8 November 2013, and interviews will be held on 07-09 January 2014.
