New green transport boost for Wales
The Welsh Assembly Government's Transport Grant settlement for 2008-09 will include £28 million support for integrated transport in Wales, together with significant funding for Wales’ rail network.
All told, investment in Wales’ local transport infrastructure will rise by 16.2 per cent to £117.6 million, said Mr. Jones, who is also Minister for the Economy & Transport today (12 March 2008).
Our new ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ schemes have been allocated an additional £10 million. This innovative programme helps local authorities to develop safe routes for walking and cycling and improve accessibility for all within a safe environment.
Projects supported under the ‘Walking and Cycling’ programme have been funded with £3.3 million.
The transport grant will also support road infrastructure works at Church Village in Rhondda Cynon Taff, with investment of £18 million - and a commitment to provide £90m in total for this project; over £1 million for the Wrexham Industrial Estate access road; £10m for the Ceredigion link road, and £7.8m to improve public transport in Swansea.
Ieuan Wyn Jones said:
This allocation will support transport schemes throughout Wales – helping us to ensure sustainable development and prosperous communities in every part of our country. This announcement helps deliver our One Wales commitments, with increased support for walking and cycling schemes.
I am also pleased to announce funding of £10 million for the new ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ initiative. This will contribute to a healthier Wales by making walking and cycling a greener and safer option for the whole community.
I hope that this new initiative will encourage people to leave their cars at home, which in turn will contribute to reducing Wales’ carbon footprint.
