Farmers' Markets
Scotland's farmers' markets are to receive more than £200,000 funding over three years.
The Scottish Government have confirmed £120,000 to develop and grow markets around the country with an extra £97,000 to help individual markets.
It is hoped that the support will increase the number of farmers involved in markets, boost sales of local produce and expand the number of venues across the country, including making markets a more permanent shopping fixture.
The additional support will be taken forward by a new partnership managed by the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society (SAOS), Scottish Food Quality Certification (SFQC) and Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), with other key groups being closely involved.
Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:
"The popularity of farmers markets has exploded recently, empowering farmers and giving them direct access to their customers. They have the potential to become a focal point for Scottish produce and ensuring we maximise what they have to offer is a priority for the Scottish Government.
"Through the national food and drink policy we have the tools to create a food and drink revolution in Scotland. Through greater collaboration and co-operation on the ground, we will achieve a healthier, wealthier, more environmentally sustainable Scotland.
"The partnership announced today strikes the right balance and will get the key players around the same table. I hope to see the group assisting in the development of Scottish food, and helping consumers connect with their local producers."
The Farmers Markets Development Partnership will be chaired by Sally Crystal, Chair of the Scottish Association of Farmers Markets (SAFM). She said:
"This is an extremely exciting project and we want it to build a legacy which will extend well beyond the three-year timeline of this project.
"The breadth of industry bodies involved so far and, crucially, the Scottish Government's support to drive this forward, speaks volume for the commitment to the development of farmers markets in Scotland."
Douglas Watson, of SAOS who will be leading the development on behalf of the Partnership, added:
"Farmers Markets have been at the vanguard of the local food development activity in Scotland for several years. The funding support and this new Partnership initiative will provide a great opportunity to develop the Farmers' Market offering and explore new ways to build direct sales to consumers on a more frequent and sustainable basis."
NFUS Chief Executive James Withers, a member of the steering group, said:
"The creation and development of farmers markets has been one of the most significant developments in the industry for many years. They have played a massive role in helping to reconnect consumers with food producers and interest in our members is steadily increasing.
"All the ingredients are there to build on the positive impact of farmers markets. With our network of producers the length and breadth of Scotland we look forward to playing our full role over the next three years."
