Slash and burn won't cure Whitehall
On the day the government announces its Comprehensive Spending Review, the Institute's director Andrew Adonis has written in the Financial Times about the pace and scale of change sweeping through Whitehall.
Andrew Adonis writes:
"The critical question is whether this transformation is simply to be slash-and-burn, or whether the coalition has the ability to use the cuts to drive fundamental improvement – in particular to decentralise and modernise the civil service, ministerial and parliamentary machines."
The Institute has also published a briefing note, Smaller and better? Whitehall after the cuts, which aims to shed light on the scale of the challenge facing Whitehall after the cuts.
The note is the result of studies of fiscal consolidations around the world, most notably Canada and Sweden, and discussions with civil servants in the UK about the challenges that lie ahead for Whitehall.
