New £70,000 EU fund will help SCoRE Welsh innovation goals

Welsh businesses and higher education organisations are to receive financial support to help access billions of pounds in EU innovation and research funding and increase Wales’ global competitiveness.

SCoRE Cymru (Supporting Collaborative Research and innovation in Europe) is a new £70,000 fund which will help Welsh organisations develop collaborative and more competitive bids with partners across Europe to access a range of EU funding streams such as Horizon 2020 – which is potentially worth £60 billion across EU Member States from next year.

Businesses, universities, institutes, as well as individuals and public sector organisations involved in cutting-edge research and innovation will be able to apply for SCoRE Cymru, which can fund up to £1,000 for the travel costs incurred in building partnerships and up to £10,000 for EU bid writing costs.

The financial support is in addition to advice and support and access to networks already being provided by a new unit or ‘one-stop-shop’ within the Welsh Government’s Welsh European Funding Office on the most appropriate research and development funding available from the EU.

Finance Minister Jane Hutt said:

"I want to see Wales as a European leader in maximising the opportunities for collaborative research and technological development through programmes such as Horizon 2020. These funding streams provide a platform for Wales to maximise its research and innovation expertise and drive forward Wales’ knowledge economy, in turn securing global competitiveness and creating growth and jobs."

Horizon 2020, the successor of the Seventh Framework Programme or FP7, will support research and technological development across the EU, helping innovative enterprises to turn new technologies into products with real commercial potential.
