Exports bring sweet taste of success for Welsh bakery

A family run bakery in Denbigh which has been delighting customers with their tasty products for over a hundred years is now building up a new customer base in the USA with support from the Welsh Government.

Henllan Bread’s bara brith is going down a treat in the States and the Moore family, who have been running bakeries since 1908, plan to build on their initial export success and are already in discussions with a major US supermarket.

Ed Moore – who is developing the export side of the business – said they were delighted with their initial export orders.

“ Bara brith is an iconic Welsh product and Henllan bara brith is a cracking cake so we’re delighted to be selling it overseas under the Henllan brand and promoting the Welsh angle. This has been reinforced by new packaging and branding with the wrapper showing a panoramic view of the Vale of Clwyd where we’re based, so we’re not only promoting Welsh food but Wales as well. Something we can all be proud of.”

Celebrating their first export orders to the USA he said support from the Welsh Government had been instrumental in their success.

“We have had tremendous support through the Welsh Government’s international trade development programme which carried out market research on the American market for us and we have participated in a number of overseas trade exhibitions which has helped us better understand international markets, raised our profile and provided a great opportunity to promote Henllan Bread and network.”

On a recent visit to Henllan Bread, Economy Minister Edwina Hart said:

”It’s  great news to hear how Welsh Government support is helping large and small companies trade internationally and win new business. It is a big step to start trading overseas and exporting which is why we have developed a number of services to encourage and support businesses at every stage. I’m delighted Henllan Bread is making the most of these opportunities to expand horizons and markets.”

Not only is Henllan Bread a family business run by the fifth generation of Moores – with six members of the family involved in the day to day running – but their 56 members of staff include husbands and wives, brothers, fathers, sons  and daughters.

Henllan Bread has recently acquired an adjacent unit on the Colomendy Industrial Estate for expansion which lays the foundation for future growth.

Ed Moore commented:

”This new unit is vital for our expansion plans and we aim to increase our exports, specifically targeting the States in the first instance while also growing our business in the UK which we hope will lead to new jobs being created.”

Henllan Bread produces 200 different products daily selling to local cafes, independent shops and national retailers including Co-op and Spar. They also manufacture for the foodservice sector and provide products for caterers of all sizes including universities, local authorities and the NHS.

With Welsh Government support the company has already exhibited at food trade shows in Hong Kong and Germany and heads for Dubai next month and hopes to participate in the New York Summer Fancy Food exhibition in the summer.
