Minister vows to tackle Anti Social Behaviour

The Minister for Housing, Carl Sargeant, yesterday highlighted how landlords will in future be able to make a difference in tackling anti-social behaviour and domestic violence in Wales.

Speaking during the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence”, the Minister outlined how the proposals in the Renting Homes White Paper will help landlords take action.

He said,

“Anti-social behaviour and domestic violence have no place in modern society but sadly these are still very real problems in many homes and communities across Wales today.

“The Welsh Government is determined to tackle these crimes and I am determined that the housing sector will do all it can to this end.

“The Renting Homes White Paper I published earlier this year includes a proposal to require a ‘prohibited conduct term’ in every tenancy contract. This will help landlords take tough, effective action against the perpetrators of domestic abuse and any households that are causing misery for their neighbours.

“Anyone breaching this term in their tenancy agreement could be liable to eviction while in cases of domestic abuse, the victim and any children would be able to remain in their home.

“This important change will enable the housing sector to play its part in tackling and preventing domestic abuse and I am determined to work with stakeholders to ensure that the proposal has maximum effect.”
