Cymorth Cymru, the body that represents providers of housing related support and homelessness services, has been awarded £15,000 to develop the directory that will improve access to support for war veterans. The money will be used to set up a database of services available to veterans to help prevent homelessness or quickly respond to it when it happens.

Supported by the Veterans Agency, the database will map services available across Wales, such as hostels and helplines, and make this information available to organisations working with veterans in Wales.

Announcing the funding, Jocelyn Davies AM, Deputy Minister for Housing said:

This funding will help veterans who need housing services find out what is available, providing a joined up approach to help make sure no one slips through the net. It fits into the Welsh Assembly Government’s plans about the way services are delivered so that they can respond flexibly and at a much earlier stage to support individuals and families to avoid homelessness.

I want to ensure that everyone can access the help they need at the earliest possible opportunity.

This summer the Assembly Government will launch its ten year homelessness plan.

We’re really pleased to be working with the Assembly and the Veterans Agency to tackle this important issue. We know from our members that they often work with people who have left the armed services and are experiencing problems that have led to them finding it hard to find or keep a home. The directory will help all the agencies working with ex-services personnel access the help they need.
