BIG digs deep to fund village hall going underground

A rural community in Northumberland without a village hall has received a £354,576 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to build a new one – into the side of a hill.

Bardon Mill and Henshaw Village Hall and Community Projects Group received the funding recently to build the partially underground hall on the site of the former Bardon Mill Colliery which closed in 1973. The group formed in 2009 after the last community building closed, leaving young and old with nowhere to go.

The Going Underground project is one of 101 across the country receiving a total of £23 million in grants today from BIG’s Reaching Communities programme, which funds projects that help those most in need and builds stronger communities.
