The Patients Association comments on the findings of the Keogh Review
Commenting on the publication of the Review conducted by Sir Bruce Keogh Mortality Outliers Katherine Murphy, CEO of the Patients Association, said:
“The findings of the Keogh review are yet another addition to the huge body of reports and investigations that have all identified the same barriers to the delivery of good care. It is of no surprise to us that the need to listen to patients, involve them in their care, value staff and for trusts to work together rather than in isolation are all key elements to ensure that standards improve and unnecessary deaths are avoided. These are all things that have been highlighted before.
The recommendations made by the public inquiry into Mid Staffordshire set out a clear blueprint for the creation of a care system which ensures the safety, dignity and well-being of patients is paramount. The Patients Association made it very clear at the time those recommendations became public that it was vital that they were implemented swiftly. Instead the Government has sought to implement a series of further reviews, despite the millions of pounds already spent on the Francis Inquiry. It is becoming increasingly apparent that this is because those that run the NHS do not want to take the radical steps demanded by Francis. We all know what needs to happen-regulation of healthcare assistants, a reformed complaints system, improved training and a properly funded and structured regulatory system. It is time for the government and NHS England to deliver action, not reviews.”
