Ordnance Survey launches Marie Curie Cancer Care Appeal
Ordnance Survey staff yesterday helped Marie Curie Cancer Care launch its first-ever local Nursing appeal in Southampton. The appeal is fronted by local nurse, Eileen Mills, one of seven nurses in Southampton who provide a free nursing service for terminally ill people who want to be cared for at home at the end of their lives.
To continue to provide the service to terminally ill patients in Southampton, the charity needs to raise £74,000 this year.
Jan Hutchinson, Director of HR and Corporate Services said: “The charity has been chosen by Ordnance Survey staff as their corporate charity, meaning that staff will undertake a range of events and activities to support the appeal this year.
"Events already planned include a clothes sale, cake sales and an auction of equipment from our current building prior to the move to our new head office at Adanac Park.”
The launch event was attended by, The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Carol Cunio who was pleased to support the appeal.
Eileen Mills, the nurse appearing in the appeal, commented: “Everyone should have access to high quality end of life care when they need it, where they want it. For most people this means dying at home. We want to be able to help more people locally, but can only do it with the support we get from donations.
"There are lots of ways to support the Nursing Appeal through taking on challenges like trekking or mountain biking or hosting an event such as a blooming Great Tea Party or supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal in March.”
