First policy agenda in Wales for disabled children and young people launched
Speaking at a Learning Disability Wales event where Ministers exchanged views with young people with disabilities, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:
Disabled children and young people are a top priority for us in Wales. Today’s event reminds us that there are still barriers in society we all need to overcome for disabled children and young people to be able to have the same opportunities as other children.
Our new policy agenda will help ensure that the disabled children and young people of Wales have equal opportunities and the best possible chances in life.
The Welsh Assembly Government has seven core aims for all children and young people. They apply equally to those who are disabled and our policy agenda sets out these core aims and highlights what we are already doing for disabled young people and how their opportunities will be enhanced further in the future.
Children’s Minister Jane Hutt said:
This document is a first for Wales. We know that services for disabled young people do not fit neatly within one policy area and this document clearly sets out what we are doing to improve the life chances of disabled children and what we plan to do in the future.
It is fitting that on International Day of Disabled People we are making a commitment to improving services for disabled children and young people in Wales and we are working closely with the Disabled Children Matter Wales campaign to make a real difference.
We want to transform lives and provide the opportunity for everyone, irrespective of background, wealth, language or health to participate fully in all aspects of society as confident and complete citizens.
