Seeking views on organ and tissue donation legislation

Workshops are being held across Wales as part of the Welsh Government’s consultation on the draft Human Transplantation (Wales) Bill which will introduce a soft opt-opt system of organ donation in Wales.

Under a soft opt-out system, unless a person registers either a wish to be a donor (opt-in) or not to be a donor (opt-out), their consent to donation will be deemed to have been given. However, a person’s family will still have a key role to play in discussions about organ donation. It is anticipated the new system will come into effect in 2015.

The consultation was launched by the Health Minister Lesley Griffiths on 18 June. It will run for 12 weeks until 10 September. During this time, a number of workshops aimed at gathering views on the draft legislation will be held as follows:

9 July 14:00-16:30 Margam Building, Swansea University, Singleton Park, Swansea

11 July 14:00-16:30 Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest

12 July 14:00-16:30 Orbit Business Centre, Merthyr Tydfil

16 July 14:00-16:30 St George’s Hotel, Llandudno

18 July 14:00-16:30 The Riverfront, Newport

6 August 14:00-16:30 City Hall, Cardiff

8 August 9:00-11:30 Media Resource Centre, Llandrindod Wells

We want as many people as possible to come along to give us their views on the draft legislation. To register attendance, please contact the Organ Donation Legislation Team on 029 2082 1427.
