Minister launches fire safety strategy
The strategy sets out how Welsh fire and rescue services will educate youngsters on the dangers of fire and fire-related incidents. It also aims to discourage fire-related anti-social behaviour and crime carried out by children and young people, such as hoax calls or arson.
Carl Sargeant launched the strategy at Prestatyn Fire Station where he also met members of the Young Fire-fighters Association.
The Minister said,
“Young people, being naturally inquisitive, may feel compelled to experiment with fire with little regard for the dangers. This kind of behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud before it leads to anything more serious.
“During my time as an industrial fire-fighter, I saw at first hand the devastation that fire can cause. It is crucial that our young people are fully aware of the dangers and are encouraged to act safety and appropriately around fire. That is what this strategy sets out to do.”
Simon Smith, Chief Fire Officer of North Wales Fire and Rescue, said,
"We are pleased that the Strategy for Children and Young People is being launched at Prestatyn as we are always looking at ways to work with children and youngsters to educate them about the dangers of fire.
“We have a number of different youth intervention schemes within North Wales Fire and Rescue Service which are aimed at improving the quality of lives for young people in the region.”Related Links
