Launch of grant scheme to support community sustainable living projects across Wales

Environment and Sustainability Minister, Jane Davidson, has launched a Supporting Sustainable Living Grant Scheme to provide funds and advice for projects to help people move to a more sustainable and lower carbon lifestyle.

Grants of up to £15,000 are available to organisations from all sectors and can fund up to 50% of a project’s costs.

The scheme aims to bring about long-term changes in lifestyles that will help reduce Wales’ greenhouse gas emissions and tackle the impact of climate change.

Speaking at the launch event at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre the Minister said:

“I am delighted to be launching this new scheme to support community engagement with climate change issues and create demonstrable outcomes. Between 50% and 80% of the actions that we take to tackle climate change will be delivered at a local level. That is why it is so important for us to engage communities across Wales in our efforts to live much more sustainable lives.

“We are providing access to expert advice and help with delivery and evaluation through our Support for Sustainable Living service. This combination of grant funding and expertise will encourage local action across Wales and maintain our reputation both at home and abroad as a place where exciting things are happening to tackle climate change.

“Wales may be a small country but the Assembly Government is determined to show we can be at the forefront of the drive to preserve and protect our way of life and our beautiful country.

“This grant scheme will empower people to plan and develop active engagement on climate change, which has real and measurable impacts on people’s behaviour. Not only can behavioural changes lead to direct emission reductions, they are critical to the take-up, deployment and performance of other sustainable initiatives.”

Environment Wales runs the scheme for the Welsh Assembly Government and employs a development officer based within Cynnal Cymru to promote and develop the scheme. The launch event in Cardiff is the first of four being held around the country this month to promote the new scheme.
