A range of projects supported

The awards are for projects commencing in April 2013, and for activity up to 31 March 2014. The Arts Council has also supported 30 awards for activity across the two years 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Projects awarded funding include a project at The Geffrye Museum, entitled The Museum of the Home; a project aimed at engaging young people with the D-day Museum at Portsmouth Museums and Records Service; and Ryedale Folk Museum's tour of their newly acquired Harrison Collection of English everyday life to rural secondary schools in a caravan.

An open application process for the third and final round of the Strategic support fund will open in autumn 2013, for activity commencing in April 2014.

Making museums more sustainable

The Renaissance Strategic support fund supports activity that will contribute to the Arts Council's goals as set out in Culture, knowledge and understanding: great museums and libraries for everyone, particularly in ensuring that museums become more sustainable, resilient and innovative, and able to attract wider audiences.

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: "Our investment of more than £17 million in smaller to medium sized museums is testament to our belief in the strength and potential of the museums sector in this country. These projects will really help these museums to grow their appeal and to become more sustainable.

"And we want to build on this ambition next year. When the new application process opens in September, we hope to see really exciting applications that will help transform the way visitors of all ages experience museums."
