Professor Harries has announced that Professor Christopher Gaskell will chair the panel of experts tasked with this review, and that he will report directly to to the Chief Scientific Adviser.
Commenting on the appointment, Professor Harries said:
“I am delighted to confirm that the review of the scientific evidence base will be chaired by Professor Gaskell.
“Chris has a wealth of experience in the field. He is a vet and is a scientist of the highest integrity and distinction. I know he will lead a proper, thorough and objective review of the scientific evidence that exists on this complex, and potentially devastating disease.
“Chris is a member of the Science Advisory Council for Wales, which offers advice and challenge to me as Chief Scientific Adviser, across all science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.”
Environment Minister, John Griffiths, commissioned a review of the scientific evidence base relating to bTB eradication last month. The Minister announced that the Chief Scientific Adviser would oversee the review, and would appoint an independent chairperson, and panel of experts, to take the work forward.
Professor Gaskell is the Principal of the Royal Agricultural College, a position he took up in August 2007. He was previously a Pro-vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool.
Professor Harries has said he will name the full panel as soon as possible, following discussions with Professor Gaskell and other advisers. It is hoped that the report will be delivered in the autumn.
