NHS Confederation - Mental Health Network comments on Mind’s report re: mental health crisis care

Paddy Cooney says a joint approach to delivering a range of support services is the right way to ensure high quality mental health care.Interim director of the Mental Health Network Paddy Cooney said:

“This research provides a detailed examination of how services are performing and where we need to improve and raise awareness of access to urgent care. It is essential that service users experiencing a crisis know how to get urgent support when they need it.

“It is important that mental health providers and commissioners learn from the best examples of care and support that demonstrate what can be achieved when services are coordinated. Everyone working in mental health shares the common aim of getting it right for service users every time. A joint approach to delivering a range of support services is the right way to ensure high quality mental health care.

“Regrettably mental ill health is still the subject of significant stigma and discrimination. All too often mental health service users experience discrimination in the workplace or when seeking employment, and in society. It is essential that the health service leads by example in challenging this stigma and discrimination. Health and care professionals should always treat every service user with the respect and dignity they deserve. Anything less is completely unacceptable.

“It’s no secret that the NHS is under intense financial pressure at the moment, but for the future health of the country, it is crucial we don’t see a disproportionate impact on mental health funding or services.”
