UK wide venues for Pre-Games Training camps
Over 100 Pre-Games Training Camp (PGTC) agreements have been signed across every nation and region of the UK, in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The camps – organised through formal agreements, or Memorandums of Understanding (MOU), between cities in the UK, National Olympic and Paralympic Committees (NOC/NPC) and international sports teams – will provide athletes with a base from which to prepare, train and acclimatise ahead of the Games.
Teams from around the world will have access to first-class sporting facilities in each area, as their athletes undertake their final training before competition begins. For athletes the last few weeks are critical to their competition performance, as they fine tune their preparations for the Games.
The camps aren't just about training though: as part of the agreements signed with Local Authorities, teams will actively engage in cultural and education activities with the local community, with a long-term goal of strengthening ties between host towns and cities and their guest countries.
Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics said: “We have always been determined to make the 2012 Games not just about London, but the whole of the UK. Offering 100 training camps across the country highlights the many world class sporting facilities that can be used by athletes from around the World. I am sure that all the athletes will be given a fantastic, warm welcome.”
