LLUK launches a new guide to support the professional development of Diploma teachers

The 14-19 education reforms present new challenges and opportunities for those working across the school and further education sectors. Lifelong Learning UK is working in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to provide professional development support for those involved in delivering the new 14-19 Diploma.

The prospect of teachers and learning practitioners being able to enhance their skills for Diploma delivery may at first seem challenging. However, ongoing research will help all those involved to address the unique challenges that the Diploma brings.

Lifelong Learning UK is working with the TDA to research the skills, knowledge and attributes that are required to deliver Diplomas effectively. Professional development can empower teachers and practitioners to apply their existing expertise and enhance their skills to engage learners.

An updated guide to assist with the planning of professional development is now available. 'A Guide to Support the Professional Development of Diploma Teachers' (2008) identifies and explains the specific areas of teaching in which practitioners can enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding for Diploma delivery.

The guide provides a foundation to identify and plan professional support and development, and is a valuable resource for staff development managers and continuous professional development leaders. Diploma teachers and practitioners can also use the guide to support their own development plans.
