LGA - Chancellor's multi-year settlement pledge is good news for local services
Responding to the announcement in the recent Autumn Statement that local government will have longer-term financial settlements on the same basis as government departments, Local Government Association Chairman Sir Merrick Cockell said:
"Longer-term funding settlements for local government are good news for everyone who uses the services councils provide. Earlier this year the LGA set out proposals for government to formally recognise the importance of the services local authorities provide and commit to a five year settlement for councils. We are pleased that the Chancellor has listened and taken steps to give the long-term certainty that local areas need to deliver consistently excellent services.
"The Chancellor's confirmation today that devolved nations will automatically receive budget increases as a result of other measures announced in the Autumn Statement further underlines the need for an overhaul of the out-dated and unfair Barnett formula. We now need a fair and equitable distribution of public money across the Union which ensures that English and Welsh local authorities get a fair deal too."
