NHS staff and those involved in health or social care innovation were today urged by Health Minister Lord Darzi to sign up to attend the first NHS Innovation Expo which will take place at London's Excel Exhibition centre on 18-19 June.

The event will be a unique opportunity for thousands of key NHS and social care staff to get together to learn more about innovation, science and technology and how it can benefit the business world and the NHS. They will be able to share ideas with over 80 of the worlds leading innovative organisations such as NASA, Microsoft, 3M and Toshiba who will be showcasing the very latest cutting edge devices and technologies.

Lord Darzi's vision for the future of the NHS, High Quality Care for All committed to creating a culture of innovation throughout the NHS where patients routinely have access to the latest treatments and technologies. The Innovation Expo is designed to help drive this vision forward.

The Expo programme includes over 20 high profile speakers already confirmed with more to follow. Highlights will include:

* Doug Comstock, Director of Innovative Partnerships Program at NASA who will discuss how advances developed by NASA to meet mission requirements such as Human exploration of space have led to innovations in Health and Medicine that are providing benefits here on Earth.
* Martha Lane-Fox, founder of lastminute.com who will share her secrets on how to bring innovative ideas to life.
* Louis Burns, Vice President at the computer giant Intel, who will discuss the role of technology in Innovation.

Lord Darzi said:

"As patient expectations increase, we must respond and foster a pioneering NHS, in which the adoption of new ideas and the diffusion of innovation is encouraged and supported.

"Creating a culture of innovation is also essential if the NHS is to meet the current economic challenges and continue to support this country's knowledge industries to ensure that we benefit from the competitive edge which they provide.

"That is why I am urging NHS and social care staff from every level and every clinical group to sign up to attend the Innovation Expo to learn more about how they can play their part in making the NHS a more innovative organisation."
