A mentoring service helping disabled Londoners make the most of the Capital's bus network has launched in Sutton.

It aims to make the Capital's transport system more accessible to disabled people and improves their ability to reach jobs and leisure opportunities.

The first 'bus day' took place in Sutton last week on a planned route starting in the town centre.

Passengers were able to get on and off along the way and were accompanied by Transport for London (TfL) travel mentors and members of the Metropolitan Police's Safer Transport Team.

As part of the bus day, travel mentors show participants how to use all the information available at a bus stop to plan their journey including the different routes, bus numbers and local maps.

They are also shown how to board the bus and stay safe while travelling.

Wheelchair users are guided through using the ramp to get on the bus and how to position their chairs on the vehicle.

Police officers act out real-life scenarios that passengers could encounter on their journeys, both on the bus and on the street, and advise them how to handle different situations.

Examples include dealing with antisocial behaviour or ticket inspections.

Mike Weston, director of operations at London Buses, said: 'We are delighted to be part of the team that is bringing 'bus days' to Sutton for the first time.

They provide a fantastic opportunity for disabled Londoners to experience travelling on a bus in a supportive environment.

'We hope those who take part in this innovative scheme will find it a useful experience that will enable them to travel independently on the bus network in future.'

The new scheme in Sutton is similar to projects already in place in Enfield, Hackney, Kingston, Merton, Southwark, Wandsworth, Westminster and Camden.

Sessions are open to disabled individuals, disability groups and school groups of disabled students.

Bus days in the borough are held every month in association with Sutton Community Transport, the Metropolitan Police's Safer Transport Team and bus operator Go-Ahead.

What are TfL travel mentors?

TfL's Travel Mentoring Service offers advice to disabled people on planning a journey using an accessible route.

It also provides travel mentors to accompany people on their first few trips to help them gain confidence and become independent travellers.

Mentoring is free and can be provided Monday-Friday from 8:00-18:00.
